Transcription Factor Hand-offs “Enhance” Motor Neuron Differentiation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rhee et al. (2016) in this issue of Neuron and Velasco et al. (2016) in Cell Stem Cell find that the activity of transcription factors binding sequentially to a series of transient early and late enhancers directs gene expression that is essential for motor neuron differentiation and function.

Fine-Tuning Motor Neuron Properties Signaling from the Periphery
Our understanding of motor neuron differentiation is rapidly evolving. New studies demonstrate that cells in the periphery of the embryo provide feedback signals for spinal cord motor neurons that are instrumental in the timing and regulation of their development. Two papers in this issue of Neuron identify a motor neuron survival factor, GDNF, and the ETS transcription factor, PEA3, as key com...
متن کاملSTAT3 Modulation to Enhance Motor Neuron Differentiation in Human Neural Stem Cells
Spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis damages spinal motor neurons and forms a glial scar, which prevents neural regeneration. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) plays a critical role in astrogliogenesis and scar formation, and thus a fine modulation of STAT3 signaling may help to control the excessive gliogenic environment and enhance neural repair. The ob...
متن کاملPuraMatrix hydrogel enhances the expression of motor neuron progenitor marker and improves adhesion and proliferation of motor neuron-like cells
Objective(s): Cell therapy has provided clinical applications to the treatment of motor neuron diseases. The current obstacle in stem cell therapy is to direct differentiation of stem cells into neurons in the neurodegenerative disorders. Biomaterial scaffolds can improve cell differentiation and are widely used in translational medicine and tissue engineering. The aim...
متن کاملSpecification of Motor Neuron Identity by the MNR2 Homeodomain Protein
Sonic hedgehog signaling controls the differentiation of motor neurons in the ventral neural tube, but the intervening steps are poorly understood. A differential screen of a cDNA library derived from a single Shh-induced motor neuron has identified a novel homeobox gene, MNR2, expressed by motor neuron progenitors and transiently by postmitotic motor neurons. The ectopic expression of MNR2 in ...
متن کاملP 129: The Role of Overexpression Transcription Factor BRN 4 in Multiple Sclerosis
Adult neurogenesis is a process of producing nerve cells from their progenitor that occurs in some areas in the brain such as the hypothalamus. Low activity in this area plays a role in neural degeneration and diseases such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and depression. MS is a neurodegenerative disease with a permanent disability that the main reason for it is axonal degeneration and neuronal...
